On March 8, International Women’s Day, some of the world’s most prominent women, including Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, Melania and Ivanka Trump, Aly Raisman, and Greta Thunberg, celebrated the occasion by championing women’s rights.
As one of her final official royal duties, Meghan visited Dagenham, England, where in 1968 female Ford factory workers famously went on strike to protest being paid less than their male counterparts; this strike prompted the passing of the Equal Pay Act and was chronicled in the 2010 film Made in Dagenham.
Sharing her thoughts on the importance of speaking up for what is right, Meghan emphasized, “This is the best example of no matter how small you might feel, how low you may feel on the ladder or the totem pole, no matter what color you are, no matter what gender you are, you have a voice, and you certainly have the right to speak up for what is right,” in a social media post following her visit to a local school.

Teen climate activist Thunberg, aged 17, observed the day by emphasizing the interconnectedness of climate justice and gender equity, stating, “We cannot have climate justice without gender equity.” She further articulated that what women desire is equality, emphasizing the need for action rather than simply congratulatory gestures or celebrations.
Recently retired Olympic gymnast Raisman, on the other hand, shared her 2018 Sports Illustrated shoot, where she posed nude with empowering phrases written on her body. She used this opportunity to encourage her followers to refrain from shaming women and girls based on their attire in her International Women’s Day post.
In her post, she emphasized, “PLEASE. A woman or girl is NEVER asking for it by what she is wearing or what time of night it is or how much she’s had to drink. A SEXY OUTFIT IS NOT AN INVITATION.”
Today is #InternationalWomensDay and we recognise that women are still far from equal to men in today’s societies.

We can not have climate justice without gender equity.
And remember; what we women want today – and every day- is equality, not congratulations or celebrations. pic.twitter.com/g1CuEN6YLX
Political figures and celebrities alike shared messages commemorating International Women’s Day. Dwayne Johnson paid tribute to his daughters, and Padma Lakshmi shared a throwback photo of herself breastfeeding her infant daughter while applying makeup.
Happy #InternationalWomensDay to my sisters doing extraordinary things all across the world! 🙌

On #InternationalWomensDay and every day, let’s say out loud once more that women’s rights are human rights—and no administration, political party, court, legislature, or biased attitudes can change that. pic.twitter.com/Zoc437YsHS
