Russia Ukraine War Latest News: Stalled Peace Talks and Ongoing Military Operations in June 2025

Peace Talks Resume but Fail to Achieve Breakthrough

Direct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine resumed in Istanbul during June 2025 after more than three years, marking the first direct talks since early 2022. However, the talks have yielded no significant progress toward ending the conflict. Russia told Ukraine at peace talks on Monday that it would only agree to end the war if Kyiv gives up big new chunks of territory and accepts limits on the size of its army, according to a memorandum reported by Russian media.

Ukraine rallied support from its Western allies on Friday after Kyiv and Moscow failed to agree to a ceasefire at their first direct talks in more than three years, with Russia presenting conditions that a Ukrainian source described as “non-starters”. The diplomatic efforts have been complicated by Russia’s refusal to accept Ukraine’s proposed 30-day ceasefire for negotiations.

Russian Territorial Gains Continue Despite Diplomatic Efforts

Military operations continue across multiple fronts as diplomatic initiatives stall. Russia gained 216 square miles in the past month (May 27–June 24, 2025), representing area roughly equivalent to 2 Nantucket islands. This brings Russia’s total territorial control to approximately 19% of Ukraine, equivalent to the U.S. state of Ohio.

Ukrainian defenders continue to firmly hold the front lines, inflicting heavy losses on Russian forces, with 44 enemy assaults repelled near Malynivka, Myroliubivka, Myrne, Promin, Novoseriivka, Udachne, Kotliarivka, Muravka, and Oleksiivka. Despite Russian advances, Ukrainian forces maintain defensive positions across critical sectors.

Escalating Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure

Russia has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as diplomatic efforts to end the nearly three-and-a-half-year-old war have stalled. The intensification of attacks on civilian targets has drawn international condemnation and complicated peace negotiations.

Recent strikes have targeted multiple Ukrainian regions. Russia has struck several locations, including Chernihiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 20 over the past day, according to reports from the Kyiv Independent.

Ukrainian Military Successes Against Russian Assets

Despite ongoing territorial losses, Ukraine has achieved significant tactical victories against Russian military assets. On June 1, 2025, Ukraine destroyed an estimated total of 11 to 12 Russian strategic bombers. On June 7 Ukraine said that its forces shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet over the Kursk region.

These successes demonstrate Ukraine’s continued capability to strike high-value Russian military targets, potentially impacting Russia’s long-term operational capacity and strategic planning.

Prisoner Exchange Agreements Continue

While broader peace negotiations have stalled, both sides have managed to maintain humanitarian cooperation through prisoner exchanges. “The exchange of prisoners seems to be the diplomatic channel that actually works between Russia and Ukraine,” Al Jazeera correspondent Dmitry Medvedenko said, reporting from Istanbul.

These exchanges represent one of the few areas of continued cooperation between the warring parties, providing hope for families and demonstrating that limited diplomatic progress remains possible despite broader disagreements.

International Involvement and Future Prospects

Renewed negotiations began in 2025 after Donald Trump became president of the United States. Trump held a phone call with Putin on 12 February and U.S. officials have been working to facilitate diplomatic solutions. However, the fundamental disagreements between Russian maximalist demands and Ukrainian sovereignty principles continue to prevent meaningful progress toward a comprehensive peace agreement.
